Axion Emission by Magnetic-Field Induced Conversion of Longitudinal Plasmons
نویسندگان
چکیده
Magnetic fields mix axions with photons, allowing for the cyclotron process e → ea by virtue of an intermediate plasmon even if axions do not couple to electrons at tree level. The axion and longitudinal-plasmon dispersion relations always cross for a certain wave-number, leading to a resonant enhancement of this process. Even then, however, it cannot quite compete with the usual nucleon processes in a supernova core. The well-known axion window 10 eV ∼ ma < ∼ 10 −2 eV remains open and axions may still constitute the cosmic dark matter.

Photon-axion conversion as a mechanism for supernova dimming: Limits from CMB spectral distortion
Axion-photon conversion induced by intergalactic magnetic fields has been proposed as an explanation for the dimming of distant supernovae of type Ia (SNe Ia) without cosmic acceleration. The effect depends on the intergalactic electron density ne as well as the B-field strength and domain size. We show that for ne < ∼ 10 cm the same mechanism would cause excessive spectral distortion of the co...
متن کاملResonantly Enhanced Axion-Photon Regeneration
Photon-regeneration experiments which search for the axion, or axionlike particles, may be resonantly enhanced by employing matched Fabry-Perot optical cavities encompassing both the axion production and conversion magnetic field regions. Compared to a simple photon-regeneration experiment, which uses the laser in a single-pass geometry, this technique can result in a gain in rate of order F 2,...
متن کاملExorcising W < −1
We show that the combined dimming of Type Ia supernovae induced by both a cosmological constant and the conversion of photons into axions in extra-galactic magnetic fields can impersonate dark energy with an equation of state w < −1. An observer unaware of the presence of photon-axion conversion would interpret the additional dimming as cosmic acceleration faster than that induced by a cosmolog...
متن کاملGuidelines for axion identification in astrophysical observations
The origin of various celestial phenomena have remained mysterious for conventional astrophysics. Therefore, alternative solutions should be considered, taking into account the involvement of unstable dark-matter particle candidates, such as the celebrated axions or other as yet unforeseen axionlike particles. Their spontaneous and induced decay by the ubiquitous solar magnetic fields can be at...
متن کاملAxion Emissivity from the Conversion of a Neutron Star into a Strange Star
The conversion of neutron matter into strange matter in a neutron star occurs through the non-leptonic weak-interaction process. We study the energy loss of the neutron star by the emission of axions in that process. Owing to that process, the neutron star will liberate the energy which can in no way be negligible as an axion burst. PACS numbers : 14.80.Mz, 95.30.Cq, 97.60.Jd
